As the last living witnesses to the horrors of Hitler’s unspeakable schemes live out their golden years, the movement to deny the Holocaust gains momentum, seeking to eradicate one of the defining periods in Jewish history by revising the annals of history.

It is the continuity of the Jewish people that has defined us for centuries and it is incumbent upon all of us to become the voice of those who survived as their numbers continue to dwindle, sharing their story with future generations so that the lessons of the past will not soon be forgotten. Every Jewish child that is brought onto this earth is living testimony to the eternal nature of the Jewish people and the greatest revenge that could ever be brought against Hitler and his army of evildoers. Now more than ever, we must continue to forge the chain that binds us to our past, by sharing the survival of our ancestors during the darkest moments in history, with our youth, our brightest hope and our link to the future.

Rainbow in the Night, a short YouTube clip, is a brief but exceptionally powerful video created specifically for today’s fast paced generation. Using stunning cinematography, a haunting score, hard hitting lyrics and vocals that will touch the deepest recesses of the soul, this historical work offers a glimpse into World War II Krakow as seen through the eyes of a survivor. Beginning with footage of a 1939 oil painting of a synagogue being ravaged by the Nazis, shown at a private event in the survivor’s home, Rainbow in the Night is an exquisitely emotional journey, as the survivor recalls first the warmth of his childhood home, then the shock and disbelief as people are forced to leave their homes for the Krakow ghetto, taken to an extermination camp and after enduring unspeakable cruelty, finally liberated. Set against a backdrop of utter despair and hopelessness, the survivor relives the inexplicable power that enabled him to persevere, the rainbow in the figurative night that promised better days to come. Culminating triumphantly with our hope for the future, the faces of hundreds of modern day Jewish children, Rainbow in the Night is both a euphoric tribute to the indomitable human spirit that enabled the Jewish people to survive against all odds and also a call to arms, to rekindle the spark of Jewish pride and unity among Jews worldwide, as we continue to rebuild the generations that were destroyed by the Nazis.

Filmed in New York, Krakow and inside the Majdanek concentration camp, this first ever music video depicting the Holocaust was directed by Daniel Finkelman, with cinematography by Mauricio Arenas and produced by both Finkelman and Arenas. With a stirring title track written and composed by executive producer Cecelia Margules and sung by legendary tenor Cantor Yaakov Lemmer, Rainbow in the Night is an epic historical work that will allow the voices of survivors to be heard for generations to come.

When pianist Sarah Dukes sent her original piano-solo compositions to renown composer Yaron Gershovsky, she was hoping the famed musician would accept her request and lend his technical mastery towards her debut album. Her songs were ready for the world, but her perfectionism wouldn’t let her rest. She needed Gershovsky’s hands.

When the peerless composer received Sarah’s songs and gave a listen, he knew he had just discovered a tremendous talent. “I saw right away that her songs came straight from her heart,” recalls Yaron Gershovsky, “She really was feeling all her music, and that touched me.” Impressed with her songwriting skills and affected by the emotion she infused with each song, Gershovksy felt he has to accept the challenge of channeling her music. That same day, as Sarah’s piano solos filled his office and awakened his senses, he responded to her e-mail: "I love the emotion that comes through when you play yours songs. I like this...a lot!"

From there began a musical relationship that cemented Dukes’ stirring collection of songs on her debut album, “Finding Forever.”

Having taken up piano lessons at the young age of six, Dukes composed her first song — a playfully dramatic number called “Elephant in Tights” — at the mere age of eight years old. Classically trained until she was 18, the North Carolina raised pianist increasingly turned to music and songwriting as a way of expressing herself and by the time she finished high school in Pittsburgh, PA, she had an impressive collection of original pieces.

Unlike most classical musicians who are glued to the rules of composition, Sarah found that the only way she could write music that resembled her truest self was to consider her emotions first and structure second. And as her music matured, she became confident with her unique way of composing.

“I just go to the piano and play whatever comes out,” Sarah explains. “It is not analyzed or restricted by anything. It is a complete representation of raw emotion.”

Gershovksy, though a genius in technical mastery and compositional structure, is quick to mention how Sarah’s genuine way of songwriting affects her music positively.

“Her music is a part of her body and her soul,” he says. “She is an accomplished piano player, able to play and transmit her emotions flawlessly.”

Of course, Sarah’s insistence on translating those exact emotions made for interesting and often demanding recording sessions. Sarah would send Gershovsky her music, telling him exactly how she wanted it to be played. The song was then recorded over and over until Sarah felt like it was her own. “It was very important that I felt like it was my emotion and my interpretation,” she explains.

Of course, this didn’t intimidate the great Gershovsky. “I saw it as a challenge to try and channel her music for her, and play it in a way that would make her feel like she was playing it herself.”

This is where Sarah feels gifted to have won Yaron’s confidence: “He was determined, and he truly became my fingers.”

To that praise, Yaron blushes. “It makes me very proud to hear that,” he responds humbly. “It’s a huge compliment, considering how much Sarah’s music means to her.”

“I learned a lot from Sarah,” he adds. “She is so amazingly sensitive to any nuance I put into her music.”

At the same time, Sarah’s humbly rejects requests to explain the story and meaning behind her songs. “Everyone interprets the songs differently, they hear what it means to them and I wouldn't want to get in the way of that,” she explains.

That being said, one thing every listener will hear is an unparalleled sound that is unmistakably from Sarah’s heart. All 14 songs on “Finding Forever” are melodic and soothing piano solos, sometimes introspective — like the deep-keyed “Troubled Thoughts” and “Up Toward Heaven” — and often hopeful and uplifting, like “Tomorrow’s Dream” and “Star Catcher.” Every note rings with a stunning sincerity and is bursting with an energy that will capture the attention of an array of listeners. Zalman Levy - Yisovivenu - Music Video

South African born Zalman Levy, presents his first single since being a Top 10 finalist in the 2nd annual "A Jewish Star" competition.

This brand new Hebrew/English song with an African pulse entitled - "Yisovivenu" set to the words of a pasuk in Devarim (32-1), was composed by Levy and is yet another of his compositions infused with the originality that sets him apart! Music arrangements by Shaya Lieberman, mastering and mixing by Sholom Lieberman.

After hearing the song and being blown away by it, Danny Finkelman and his Sparks Productions team embarked upon a music video.

Growing up in the summery suburbs of Johannesburg, Zalman was exposed to a society embedded in music. From the cities' extravagant Shul choirs, to its world renown Chazzanim, or just plain simple; Jo'burg's minivan-taxis bouncing to African beats, Levy was imbued with a passion for music. And as a child, after being a soloist in the Torah Academy Boys Choir and a member of the Johannesburg Jewish Male Choir, Levy tapped into that passion and began to write music of his own.

Zalman stems from a highly musical family. His Maternal Grandfather; R' Avraham Roness and Great grandfather; were both Chazzanim in Synagogues in S. Agathe and Montreal, CA, whom no doubt handed their talent down to their children. Zalman's brother; Mendy, A Rabbi in Bal Harbour, FL created the Melbourne Boys Choir.

While the Werdyger name graces many an album cover, it is family patriarch Chazan Reb Dovid Werdyger who has the most recordings to his credit. Reb Dovid’s musical talent was evident at an early age, when he was first appointed soloist in the choir of the Eizik Yeikeles Synagogue in Krakow at age six. Just six years later Reb Dovid was invited by Reb Yankel Talmud to become the soloist for his prominent choir, singing before the Gerrer Rebbe, the Imrei Emes, and thousands of his chasidim in the town of Ger.

Singing was not just a profession for Reb Dovid, his melodious voice literally saved his life. Taken from the Podgorze ghetto in Poland, Reb Dovid was one of just forty men saved from a firing squad after his rendition of Kel Molei Rachamim moved a Nazi commandant so deeply that Reb Dovid’s life was spared.

Once in America, Reb Dovid’s music continued to inspire, in Shuls, concert halls and on radio programs, filling Yiddishe homes and hearts with hartzige music that kept the flame of Yiddishkeit burning strong, particularly for those who had endured the horrors of the war and were attempting to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. Reb Dovid’s first album, Tefillah L’David, released in 1959, was so well received it sold out its entire first run.

Over the years, Reb Dovid’s music has brought the beauty of Yiddishe music to countless thousands and his body of work encompasses not only a legacy of music continued by many of his talented offspring, but a staggering thirty albums as well. Fifty years after his rendition of Kel Molei Rachamim saved his life in the Krakow-Plaszow concentration camp, Reb Dovid once again stirred the soul with his rendition of the same tefilla, this time at the ninth Siyum Hashas in memory of the six million who died al Kiddush Hashem.

Every now and than you get introduced to a song that just has "it.." A song that really moves, its lyrics are simple yet poignant, its message universal. These were my feelings when I heard this song for the first time. And as I looked over to the dance floor I realized I was not alone. The guests at this wedding, from all walks of life, were surging with energy as the first few bars of this song began. It was an awesome thing to behold.

At that moment I decided that I want to record this song and share it with my friends.

So, while my team and I continue assembling our next album for you to enjoy, here is our rendition of a truly great song, a song which, to me, means Jewish pride, defiance, faith, love of Hashem, love of fellow Jews, and ultimately, fearless joy.

A newly released album of hassidic melodies is attracting widespread attention…
even from Japan! The album, produced by a pulpit rabbi from Maryland, brings us niggunim written by famous tzadikim, such as the Noam Elimelech ztz"l in a collection slated to be the first in a series of genuine hassidic melodies.

The album "Heartfelt Melodies" contains nine niggunim whose arrangement preserves their authentic musical character, whilst maintaining superior sound quality. The album was recorded in state-of-art studios with the best and most experienced professionals in the country. This project was the inspiration of Rabbi Moshe Pinchas Weisblum, the highly talented Rav of a thriving community in Maryland, who in addition to featuring in the album, is responsible for the production
and musical arrangement.

In the notes included with the album, Rav Weisblum explains that "Heartfelt Melodies are from the most sacred of sources. Some of them were composed by the most holy of tzadikim and were actually sung at their own holy tables, where I was privileged to be raised, by my great grandfather the "Noam Elimelech" (zechuto
yagen aleinu) and Rebbe Yaakov Yitzhak Weisblum ztzvk"l Rav of the communities of Swierz and Lissa.

The tradition of interweaving niggunim into the nusach of the davening was started by the Hassidic courts of Ziditshov and Stretin, from the Rebbe of Alesk and composers of the stature of the holy mohel of Stanislevov, towering figures who alongside their involvement with holy matters, lay claim to ancient melodies which with the course of time became popular everyday niggunim found in almost every Jewish home.

The biggest surprise, however, comes from the other side of the world. Amazon's online Japanese website has marketed the album with amazing success under the label of Melodies of the Heart. The Japanese have welcomed the album as a source of music that calms and uplifts the spirit.

Weisblum promises there are more albums to come in the series that will be a musical tribute in memory of generations gone by.

The finale concert held in Brooklyn was a sold out event, with 10 adult finalists and three children finalists competing in a suspense-filled finale, each giving spectacular performances. 16 year old Mendy Piamenta of Israel and 11 year old Yisroel Amar of Golden Beach, Florida were chosen as the 2011 Jewish Stars.

The unparalleled superstar of Jewish music Avraham Fried, who has been inspiring audiences for the last 30 years will once again assume the mantle of a judge on A Jewish Star, contributing his wise and astute insight as he did in Seasons 1 and 2. Fried is once again joined by Chassidic comic Mendy Pellin and Eli Gerstner, the multi-talented Jewish singer, songwriter and producer who is responsible for the successes of the Yeshiva Boys Choir, The Chevra, and the Yosis Orchestra.

Joining as a judge for Season 3 is the legendary composer Yossi Green, whose songs have been featured on over 150 albums, and has composed hit songs for countless singers including superstars Mordechai Ben David, Avraham Fried, Yaakov Shwekey, Dedi, and most recently, Shloime Gertner.

“I think it’s amazing that you are giving young people a chance to connect to Torah and Jewish music,” said Green about the competition.

This year’s third season of the worldwide competition is executive produced by Yossi and Mica Soffer of COLlive.com and Unique Image Advertising. Partnering with them is the Milvado Corporation’s Chezky Kaufthiel and Charlie Harary, who will assist in expansion and execution of the production.

The Jewish Star concert will be produced by world renowned producer and conductor Yochi Briskman.

With Season Three beginning, the anticipation is skyrocketing. Who will audition this round, who will be the public’s favorite and what will the judges say?

The deadline for auditions is Dec 10, 2011. Finalists will perform at a live show on February 5th, 2012 at Brooklyn College Center for Performing Arts in Brooklyn, New York.

Avriram Tamam (24) was born in Bat Yam to a typical non-religious family. When he was three, he caused the family to make a dramatic change in their lifestyle. While the family was sitting together watching television, Aviram began to play with the shining, talking big box until it fell on his head with the glass screen shattering into sharp fragments and the little boy's blood sprinkling the stone-tiled floor. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. His distraught mother vowed that if he comes back to the living, they will keep television out of the house and start to keep the Sabbath. Yeshiva Boys Choir filmed a new music video last week after producer Eli Gerstner landed a unique partnership with a Universal Music record label.

Jewish music producer Eli Gerstner will be releasing The Yeshiva Boys Choir Chanukah CD on indieExtreme through Fontana Distribution, an independent music division of Universal Music Group Distribution.

This rare collaboration is a result of a music industry insider hearing YBC's catchy Jewish-pop tunes, and asking Gerstner to write songs for a non-Jewish label.

But Gerstner, a household name on account of his stellar solo albums and hand-crafted male vocal groups, "The Chevra," "Menucha" and "Tek-noy," had another idea.

"I told him, during the month of December, all you hear on the radio are holiday – Xmas songs," he told COLlive.com. "The Jewish population may be a small percentage of the population – but shouldn't we be represented and have holiday songs of our own?"

"The guy called Universal and pitched it to them. He played the choir's popular 'Kol Hamispalel - the Remix' and some of our other hits for them. They loved it," he recalls.

The 11 song holiday CD was primarily composed, arranged and directed by Gerstner, with the rhythm recorded in Israel, vocals recorded in New York and strings and brass recorded in New Jersey.

The choir is conducted by Yossi Newman with music by The Yosis Orchestra and the CD was mixed by Gerstner and mastered by Larry Gates.

Ahead of the release, a music video for the song "'Those Were the Nights" was filmed this week in a Boro Park home with Chanukah decor lining the walls. There were doughnuts on the table and a Menorah in the window.

The lively, rambunctious group of about 50 boys, ranging in age from 7-14, excitedly prepared for the film shoot in a local Shul, getting dressed up in costumes and singing in little groups as they waited for the filming to begin.

Lyrics written by songwriter, entertainer and radio personality Country Yossi, the song is funny, upbeat, and is all about the holiday of Chanukah. It will be launched on the Vevo music channel on YouTube.

"Already we are seeing that there is a great demand for Jewish music, there has been so much interest," Gerstner said, noting that Universal's marketing campaign will include featuring it in the AOL music section for 2 months.

"This deal for us is not about the money," he added. "We would have to sell thousands of CD's to make a penny back from the money we invested. For us it's about reaching unaffiliated Jews who are searching for something Jewish."

That is also the reason why Gerstner insisted that members of the choir play all the characters in the music video and did not hire professional actors to play the adult characters in the song.

"What Yossi [Newman] and I always worked for with the choir is to break the stereotypes of what the 'outside' world thinks of Orthodox Jewish kids," said Gerstner, who was a judge at season two of A Jewish Star singing competition.

"Our videos feature regular, happy, kids doing regular, everyday activities. And people respond to that. Most of the comments on our songs on Youtube are from unaffiliated Jews from around the world who are so excited to be watching something Jewish."

Universal's label will be releasing the CD on November 15, 2011 and will be selling it to the wider public on iTunes and Amazon.com by Fontana Distribution (UMG Distribution).

And if it does well?

"It will open up a whole new market," Gerstner said. "This could be a huge Kiddush Hashem."

New York, NY - While much of current Jewish music seems to be incorporating many of the trends and techniques of today’s secular music, one of the biggest names in the Jewish music business is bringing back old school Jewish music with an album that fuses the feel of yesteryear with the today’s rigorous musical standards.

“I have been wanting to do this for a long time,” Mendlowitz told VIN News. “The idea was to bring back the hits that many of us grew up with, good material that has been around for a few hundred years up until now. So much of the current music doesn’t sound like what I know Jewish music to be and I wanted to bring that back.”

Big Time Alter Heim features the voices of Mordechai Ben David, Lipa Schmelczer, Dovid Gabay, Shloime Gertner and the Mezamrim Choir, accompanied by acclaimed Israeli clarinetist Chilik Frank and the Freilach Orchestra. Produced and directed by Mendlowitz, with the assistance of associate producer Benny Taubenfeld of Sameach Music and arrangements by Suki Berry, the album features wedding, dance and march medleys and chupah selections, among others.

Sameach Music reports that the album will be available in stores today.

VIN Exclusive Interview: MBD Says New Release Will Be His Final Album

New York - Thirty eight years after the release of his first album, Mordechai Ben David Sings Original Chasidic Niggunim, the man who has been called the undisputed king of Jewish music has announced the release of what will be his final album.

The album, titled Kisufim, is slated to be released on Tuesday by Aderet Music and will contain fourteen songs, including ten new compositions and four old niggunim, two of which date back a century or more and features significant vocal contributions by the Shira Choir.

Werdyger, who composed several of the songs on Kisufim, described this album as having a very different flavor than his most recent hit album, Kulam Ahuvim, whose songs have proven to be a mainstay on the wedding circuit.

“This particular album is a very warm, chasidishe album, something I have wanted to do for many, many years, and I plan to sign off with it. It is a mix of new material and old nigunim, with original material by Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz, Yitzchak Fuchs and myself. I am madly in love with it.”

In an exclusive interview with VIN News, MBD spoke about his decision and the current state of Jewish music.

VIN: Is this really your last album?
MBD: That is the current plan.

VIN: Does this announcement mean you are leaving the Jewish music scene entirely?
MBD: I am only retiring from albums.

VIN: What made you take this step?
MBD: Putting together an album is too much work. People don’t realize how much goes into an album. Unfortunately, electronic media has destroyed the CD business and even the biggest secular companies are going under because people just download music they find online.
The way it is right now, it really doesn’t pay to do an album.

VIN: In that case, what does the future hold for Jewish music?
MBD: Moshiach will come and we will have the music of the Leviyim in the Beis Hamikdash.

VIN: What are your thoughts on current Jewish music?
MBD: Unfortunately I really have no time to listen and don’t really know what is going on in Jewish music. I do know that it has taken a completely different direction and Chasidic music is no longer Chasidic music.

VIN: What do you think is missing in today’s Jewish music?
MBD: Hartz, which has to be the main ingredient in any album. If music doesn’t come from the heart it is nothing.

VIN: What do you think is the reason you are still around and popular so many years later?

MBD: Siyata d’ishmaya.

VIN: Thank you for your time.

A member of one of Jewish music’s most heralded families, Mordechai Ben David’s musical career began when his father, the legendary Chazan Dovid Werdyger, overheard him playing original musical compositions and suggested he record an album of his own, which was released in 1973. Kisufim will be MBD’s thirty sixth full length solo album, in addition to four singles and having appeared on over thirty five other albums in his very lengthy career. MBD has become a fixture on the concert circuit with numerous appearances in the HASC concert series and the annual Chabad Telethon. Many of his classic songs remain as popular today as they were when they were first released years ago.
