With the release of his upcoming album, V’ani Tefilosi, the Jewish
music world will have a long awaited opportunity to appreciate the many
facets of the multi-talented Mendy Werzberger, whose compositions and
vocals have graced numerous songs over the years. Mendy’s songs have
been featured on albums by Piamenta, Yosef Chaim Shwekey and Mendy Wald,
among others, and he has appeared not only at countless simchas but
also on several albums and projects over the years including Unity for
Justice, Copyright and Mendy Wald’s Echad Yachid U’Meyuchad.
As a child growing up in Toronto Mendy sang on
several albums, but despite his mother’s persistent urging, he had no
interest in recording a solo album. As time and life went by, music
became an integral part of his life and Mendy soon found himself
composing song after song. He began working on an album several years
ago, and after sitting shiva for his mother, Blima bas R’ Chaim a’h this
past summer, Mendy realized it was time to fulfill his mother’s dream
by finishing the album, which is dedicated in her memory.
V’ani Tefilosi features eleven very diverse songs,
ten of which are written by Mendy, some as solo compositions and others
in conjunction with some of the biggest names in the Jewish music
business including Yitzy Waldner, Yitzy Schwartz, Yanky Katina and Moshe
Werzberger. The album also features the talents of Eli Lishinsky, Shai
Bachar, Nir Graff, Yitzy Schwartz, Mona Rosenblum, Eli Laufer, Yitzy
Spinner, Shloime Kaufman, Yoel Dikman, Avrumi Berko, Ruli Ezrahi and
composer Sholy Brach.
Calling music “the language of the soul”, Mendy
covers a wide range of musical styles, with compositions that are both
cutting edge and timeless and he hopes that his singable, heartfelt
songs will connect with people and inspire them. Mendy also donned the
producer’s hat for this album in order to bring out the emotion and true
essence of each and every song.
The upbeat and catchy song Toda Lecha, being released as a music video produced by
Sparks Productions and a free download, is particularly meaningful to Mendy.
“Our live are so busy and fast paced,” explained Mendy. “We are so
rushed that we take things for granted and miss out on so much of life.
We all need to slow down, take the time to look around us and
appreciate all that Hashem gives us on a daily basis.”
V’ani Tefilosi is in the final stages of production
and Mendy hopes to have the album, which is being distributed by Nigun,
on store shelves by Rosh Chodesh Adar.
While the Werdyger name graces many an album cover, it is family
patriarch Chazan Reb Dovid Werdyger who has the most recordings to his
credit. Reb Dovid’s musical talent was evident at an early age, when he
was first appointed soloist in the choir of the Eizik Yeikeles
Synagogue in Krakow at age six. Just six years later Reb Dovid was
invited by Reb Yankel Talmud to become the soloist for his prominent
choir, singing before the Gerrer Rebbe, the Imrei Emes, and thousands of
his chasidim in the town of Ger.
Singing was not just a profession for Reb Dovid, his melodious voice
literally saved his life. Taken from the Podgorze ghetto in Poland,
Reb Dovid was one of just forty men saved from a firing squad after his
rendition of Kel Molei Rachamim moved a Nazi commandant so deeply that
Reb Dovid’s life was spared.
Once in America, Reb Dovid’s music continued to inspire, in
Shuls, concert halls and on radio programs, filling Yiddishe homes and
hearts with hartzige music that kept the flame of Yiddishkeit burning
strong, particularly for those who had endured the horrors of the war
and were attempting to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. Reb
Dovid’s first album, Tefillah L’David, released in 1959, was so well
received it sold out its entire first run.
Over the years, Reb Dovid’s music has brought the beauty of Yiddishe
music to countless thousands and his body of work encompasses not only a
legacy of music continued by many of his talented offspring, but a
staggering thirty albums as well. Fifty years after his rendition of
Kel Molei Rachamim saved his life in the Krakow-Plaszow concentration
camp, Reb Dovid once again stirred the soul with his rendition of the
same tefilla, this time at the ninth Siyum Hashas in memory of the six
million who died al Kiddush Hashem.
At long last, the beauty, the purity and the varmkeit of Reb Dovid’s
magnificent voice can finally be appreciated to its fullest with a
completely remastered collection of some of his most magnificent
recordings. Recapturing the hartz and neshoma of Chasidic music, Reb
Dovid will literally transport you back to a time and place where music
was the language of the heart and a true expression of the beauty of
Yiddishkeit.

This piece, from the lamentations (kinos) that the Jewish nation recites on the 9th of Av in the Hebrew calendar, when we mourn the destruction of both the first & second Holy Temples, is the highlight of the lamentations. It depicts the tragic execution by the Roman empire, of the 10 Harugei Malchus - the ten martyrs. This particular part discusses the killing of the last of the martyrs, the righteous Rabi Elozor Ben Shamua, who was one of the 5 most prominent disciples of Rabi Akiva. He was 105 years old when he was killed.
Cantor Rosenblatt recorded this composition in June of 1916, 95 years ago, in New York City. This recording was extremely distorted & indiscernible, until Aderet Studios expertly cleaned up the audio.
Even though this recording its 95 years old, it carries a very strong emotional lament, of our current events. May Moshiach come speedily in our days. Amen

A Jewish Star singing talent competition is well underway after a record number of contestants from around the world auditioned for Season Two.
144 auditions who fit the strict criteria were accepted to join the music contest – 77 in A Jewish Star and 67 for A Jewish Star Junior – the new division for boys ages 8 to 14.
“Without a doubt this is the most ambitious grassroots project in the Jewish music industry,” said Mica Soffer, Executive Producer of the competition.
Aderet and others in the music industry are keeping close tabs as voting has officially opened December 30 2010. Rating contestants from 1 to 5 stars, the public will be choosing 10 finalists and 3 junior finalists that will continue on to perform in the season finale – A Jewish Star Live Show on February 20, 2011.
At the show in the Brooklyn School of Music, judges Avraham Fried, Eli Gerstner and Mendy Pellin will be choosing 3 runner ups, and from them the next Jewish Star and the next Junior Jewish Star.
“The idea of this contest, that anyone can just display their talents to such a huge audience and be discovered in minutes instead of the years it would have taken in years past really appealed to us,” said Mendy Werdyger, CEO of Aderet/Mostly Music, the largest distributor and promoter of Jewish music and one of the sponsors of the contest.
