Shtar–Infinity

However one looks at Shtar, they are a unique group, both meticulous and different. Whilst preserving the values of authentic Jewish music, Shtar has found a way to take music to new heights, sounds of which the ear never tires.

Shtar is a fascinating band, due to the group's makeup. Five avreichim, chareidi musicians now living in Ramat Bet Shemesh who have made aliyah in order to immerse themselves in limmud torah in the Holy Land. Their days is spent in kollel, their evenings in song.

The unique group was formed when Ori M'Ori, writer of the lyrics, who hails from Seattle came to Israel for a two week vacation and decided to stay. Binyamin Adam, originally from Milford, near London, is responsible for orchestration and production. These two banded together and along the way collected Dan Isaac, another Brit, bass player Avi Sommers from New York and local drummer Tzvi Solomons. Together they are responsible for the liveliest Jewish music currently available.

"Music and song are one of the oldest and most basic ways to celebrate all manner of occasions, from King David to Matityahu the Hasmonean" explains Ori M'Ori. "We create music which is quiet and refined but which affects you inside. Our aim is to reach out and touch people with our music, to make them dance but also to think. We are looking to communicate through pleasure, and to get people to feel it." Shtar's
music is verily a treat for the ears. The group seek to get people hooked into Judaism through their music, hence their performances are for young audiences in yeshivas, colleges and on University campuses throughout the country and all over the world. The anglo accent and energy of these bochurim in white shirts, with tzitzit glinting in the stage-lights creates a uniquely charming atmosphere that carries the youthful crowd with it.

Hassidic Star Fried Sings Israel's Popular Songs

Hassidic singer Avraham Fried is marking the 30th year of his musical career and gave a performance in Rehovot last week.

After many years in which he made music which relied solely on Jewish sources, Fried recently began collaborating with Israeli songwriters and will soon release a new album based on that collaboration. Arutz Sheva met up with the popular singer to hear about this new experience.

“I’m excited about it because after the success of ‘Aleh Katan’ and ‘Rak Tefila’ (Little Leaf and Just a Prayer, two songs Fried sang which were not based on texts from Jewish sources) it was a no-brainer to do an all Israeli CD,” Fried said.

“I think the Israeli music, especially the songs we chose, is full of soul and prayer,” he added. “For me it was very heartwarming to get a personal phone call from the composers of these songs to tell me that they love my version. I’m comfortable with singing in Hebrew.”

For the new album Fried is working with some of Israel’s top songwriters, including David D’Or, Hanan Yovel (who also wrote the music for ‘Rak Tefila’), Boaz Sharabi and Ariel Zilber.

“They are all very wonderful people,” he said. “It’s great to see them. They’re so full of life and passion and fire, and I trust that we’ll find some great material.”

D’Or, who released an album based on melodies composed to Jewish prayers two years ago and who performed with Fried last week, said that it is a pleasure to work with him.

“This is the second time that we’ve performed together and our voices melt into each other,” he said. “I believe that what makes him special is that the heart sings and when the heart sings you can hear it through the voice.”

Yosef Karduner – Kumsitz

Yosef Karduner one of the pioneers of Jewish music since its inception with numerous chart topping hits to his name such as the acclaimed Shir Lamaalot which generated a range of versions recorded by artists from across the musical spectrum, is currently celebrating the launch of his tenth album, with a difference.

In contrast to his previous albums, which contained a selection of new songs in Karduner's unique style, his new album Kumsitz consists of the best of Karduner's unforgettable hits and more, that were recorded at various live
shows performed throughout the US last winter.

Karduner rarely performs live due to his modest nature. The tremendous success of his many albums left his devoted producer, Yehuda Kunsman, no choice and he was forced to dispatch Karduner overseas for a round
of performances. The overwhelming impact of the shows caught them by surprise and this together with the high quality professional recording as well as pressure from those involved ensured that a kumsitz album of the shows
was just a matter of time.

The new album is comprised of sixteen tracks, among which are Tesameach, Yedid Nefesh, Vetaher Libenu, Tzaveh Yeshuot Yaakov, Shir Lamaalot, and others.

Karduner's identity as a Breslover hassid finds expression in two of his albums which contain hassidic niggunim. One album contains Shabbat songs and features Shuli Rand, and another contains songs for Motzei Shabbat. The lyrics of the songs in the other albums as well have a trace of the enchanting quality of Rebbe Nachman.

The album will be distributed by Greentec, the leading company in Jewish music and content in Israel.

Yuval Taieb – "A Day will Come" (Yom Yavo)

Summer hit in Israel and Europe - takes off:

Another exciting hit from singer Yuval Taieb is about to take the playlists by storm. A Day will Come ("Yom Yavo"), music and lyrics written by Yaakov Menashe and produced in the studios of Amos Cohen. Youval taieb continues his campaign of encouragement, optimism and a call for unity and connection within am yisrael.

Taieb has been singing piyyutim since the age of eight. Even then his father sensed that his considerable talent needed polishing and sent him to learn voice production and classical violin. Along with his school lessons, the youngster listened to the leading lights in Arabic music, such as Um Kaltoum, Abdul Wahab, Abed Halim, Frid Al-Atrash and others. Since then he has brought out a number of albums, sung duets with the leading singers in the country and studied with top musicologists. Today, Taieb is considered, despite his youth, to be a walking encyclopaedia on everything in the realm of Arabic music. An expert in Egyptian music, he takes calls from professionals seeking his advice on the source of melodies and maqams.

Youval taieb lectures in the history of poetry and piyyutim at various academic institutions, among others at a "secret" course at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem Taieb's two previous singles have found a place in every home and studio. Both Am Echad ("One People") and his version of Halleluya brought joy and pleasure to many. Work on the remaining songs from the anticipated album is almost complete. Experts in the field who have heard material from the album expect the new album to garner enthusiastic acclaim.

The complete album is due to be released prior to the chagim be"H.

FREE Download - Ah Simcha With Nachas

Nachas Music has been gaining popularity among the wedding scene over the past year or so.  Eli Gerstener, Shloime Kaufman and Ruli Ezrachi are just some of the professionals that have been working closely with Nachas in establishing his name thus far. He recently shared the stage with Benny Friedman at a Concert upstate where he received rave reviews which made it all the way to my office in Cedarhurst. Nothing is official as of yet, however, I conjecture that he is quietly but efficiently working on an album, which based on his submissions thus far, would end all. He is known as Nachas, after his renowned single that catapulted him to the top of the Wedding scene.  And if you are wondering what his real name is – well, you will just have to sit tight a little longer.
Nachas is a young, talented singer with a unique sense of dynamism and charisma who many critics have had their eye on of late. He has resorted to a method of marketing never before seen in the Jewish Music market. He is set to release his second single in under a year and music aficionados are looking at Shabbos Nachamu for his long awaited release. Those interested are encouraged to visit nachasmusic.com where you will be able to download this all new single free of charge, as well as listen to some of the other songs which have contributed to this rising stars renowned status.

It’s not often that I choose to feature the talents of a performer because many of them usually do not have what it takes to stand the test of time. Here, however, we have a singer, song writer and energizer that people who adore upon seeing and hearing. He brings something unique to the mix and I can see him going a long way.

Leiby Forever - Lipa Schmeltzer

Download $3.99 at www.topjewishmusic.com. Proceeds go to Kletzky Parents Fund

Lipa Schmeltzer, a popular and high-profile singer in the Hasidic community, chanted a Yiddish song to the boy’s younger sister to comfort her.

The popular performer — little Lieby’s favorite — didn’t sing the piece because mourners are not supposed to hear music for a year after a death. But Schmeltzer said that after Lieby’s dad told him a story about his only son, Schmeltzer formulated a story and called it: “As Long as You’re Alive.” And then he chanted the story to Lieby’s sister, Nechama.

“One day he tripped and fell down on the way to school and his father was sympathetic and Leiby looked at the father and said, ‘Remember the words As Long as You’re Alive.’ He was three years old,” Schmeltzer said.

Schmeltzer also said he was moved by the numbers of people who were gathering to offer solace to the Keitzky family at their Borough Park home.
“There were lines and lines. I never saw anything like it,” he said. “The people are very shattered and broken.”

The performer noted that Lieby’s father, Nachman, was devastated by his only son’s grisly death and dismemberment, allegedly at the hands of Levi Aron.

“He is very broken but he’s keeping very strong,” Schmeltzer said. “He said he had the honor to have the soul for nine years.”

Schmeltzer said he’s now working on a song called “The Story of Leiby,” based on what he believes the child — described as devout beyond his years — would have been like if he’d grown to be a grandfather.

“Everything came to an end because of that black day that we had,” the performer said. “All the goodness that came from Leiby is now vanished.”
He also said he’s been amazed by the comments from others who knew the remarkable youngster.

“The stories we heard are unbelievable,” he said. “One story is that they were playing a game in class. At the last minute, Leiby switched teams. Why did he switch? He said, ‘Because my team keeps winning and they keep losing, and I want to help them win.’

“He was a very smart boy.”

Od Yosef Chai: High Holidays - FREE SINGLE

The critically acclaimed, "Od Yosef Chai" series returns! Featuring the legendary Cantor Yosselle Rosenblatt. This fully restored double CD includes hand picked classics for the High Holy days.

Keep an eye out for the upcoming release of the fifth volume in the Od Yosef Chai series. In the meantime, please enjoy this free download, Tzadik Rabbi Elazar, recorded over 95 years ago restored to original pristine state.

This piece, from the lamentations (kinos) that the Jewish nation recites on the 9th of Av in the Hebrew calendar, when we mourn the destruction of both the first & second Holy Temples, is the highlight of the lamentations. It depicts the tragic execution by the Roman empire, of the 10 Harugei Malchus - the ten martyrs. This particular part discusses the killing of the last of the martyrs, the righteous Rabi Elozor Ben Shamua, who was one of the 5 most prominent disciples of Rabi Akiva. He was 105 years old when he was killed.

Cantor Rosenblatt recorded this composition in June of 1916, 95 years ago, in New York City. This recording was extremely distorted & indiscernible, until Aderet Studios expertly cleaned up the audio.

Even though this recording its 95 years old, it carries a very strong emotional lament, of our current events. May Moshiach come speedily in our days. Amen

Download the track for free at MostlyMusic.com, Double CD in stores in 2 weeks.
